Eurovision 2014: The Wiener takes it all – RESULTS!

WOW! Eurovision tries its best to stay as non-political and neutral as possible, but there can be no doubt that tonight’s events furthered the cause of acceptance and celebration of all sorts of people and styles. This feeling was summarised in the winner’s speech, delivered by Austrian drag act Conchita Wurst in what will surely be one of the milestone moments in the contest.

So now the confetti is settling, let’s take a moment to look at how the results panned out!

Eurovision 2014: Grand Final preview & running order

Right, this is it! Eurovision week has raced past, and both semi-finals have taken place. You can read my reviews of Semi 1 & Semi 2 if you like! But let’s look forward for tomorrow’s Grand Final.

25 countries have fought (or bought) their way to the grand final, defeating 12 other nations for the chance of Eurovision victory. But only one can be victorious, and bring the contest back to their home country for 2015 (unless it’s currently being annexed).  Who will it be?

Eurovision 2014: Semi-Final 2 RESULTS

Wow, what a show! From what appeared on first glance to simply contain the “other” countries, while the big names occupied the first semi, I think it may have been the superior show. A great mix of styles and energy. But we did this for a reason – there were 10 slots left for Saturday’s grand final, but 15 countries were still in the mix. Who would qualify?

Eurovision 2014: Semi-Final 2 preview

Well, after a night of thrills and spills in the first semi-final, 10 new qualifiers joined Denmark and the Big Five in Saturday’s final. There are 10 spots left, but 15 nations are keen to snatch one of those tickets. Who is going to make it?

I’ve been saying for ages that semi-final 2 is perhaps a little easier for some surprise qualifiers, but after Tuesday’s curveballs of both San Marino and Montenegro qualifying for the first time ever, who knows what’s going to happen? Maybe a semi-final lacking so many obvious qualifiers is going to stir things up quite a bit!

Road to Copenhagen 2014: Sebalter – “Hunter of stars” (Switzerland)

Seven nations left to review – and finally one that might be about to turn its luck around. Let’s face it, it couldn’t get much worse could it?

SwitzerlandA fair few nations have had horror stories since the semi-final system began in 2004 but Switzerland have had it rougher than some. In the 9 occasions it’s had to qualify, only twice has it been successful. 2005’s “Cool Vibes” was to be their last top 10 finish to date, but even that only just squeezed through the semis. Even tighter was 2011’s “In love for a while” which surprised many by qualifying (just) for Dusseldorf’s final, only to finish last. Continue reading
