Eurovision 2014: The Wiener takes it all – RESULTS!

WOW! Eurovision tries its best to stay as non-political and neutral as possible, but there can be no doubt that tonight’s events furthered the cause of acceptance and celebration of all sorts of people and styles. This feeling was summarised in the winner’s speech, delivered by Austrian drag act Conchita Wurst in what will surely be one of the milestone moments in the contest.

So now the confetti is settling, let’s take a moment to look at how the results panned out!

Eurovision 2014: Grand Final preview & running order

Right, this is it! Eurovision week has raced past, and both semi-finals have taken place. You can read my reviews of Semi 1 & Semi 2 if you like! But let’s look forward for tomorrow’s Grand Final.

25 countries have fought (or bought) their way to the grand final, defeating 12 other nations for the chance of Eurovision victory. But only one can be victorious, and bring the contest back to their home country for 2015 (unless it’s currently being annexed).  Who will it be?

Well, what do I know, eh? What a crazy night!! Well, a crazy morning for me, it’s a lovely Spring morning in Japan, and I’ve just been watching the show via a rather buggy connection on SVT’s playback service. At least it was up (no thanks, iPlayer…). So let’s take this one stage at a time.

Road to Copenhagen 2014: Sanna Nielsen – “Undo” (Sweden)

Mm, time for another favourite I think, or at least as close as we can get in a contest that (at least I feel) could go many ways. But could Eurovision really return to Sweden so soon?

SwedenThat’s debatable of course, but at the very least it’s great that Sanna Nielsen will finally be representing them in Copenhagen, emerging successful on her 7th attempt to win Melodifestivalen. “Undo” is also another installment in the success story of Fredrik Kempe, one of its writers. He has written multiple songs for Melodifestivalen, and in the last eight years alone he has been involved in the writing of 15 finalists, including four winners. The most popular of these so far (pardon the choice of phrase) was “Popular”, Eric Saade’s 3rd place 2011 entry for Dusseldorf. Continue reading
