Eurovision 2014: Semi-Final 2 RESULTS

Wow, what a show! From what appeared on first glance to simply contain the “other” countries, while the big names occupied the first semi, I think it may have been the superior show. A great mix of styles and energy. But we did this for a reason – there were 10 slots left for Saturday’s grand final, but 15 countries were still in the mix. Who would qualify?

Eurovision 2014: Semi-Final 2 preview

Well, after a night of thrills and spills in the first semi-final, 10 new qualifiers joined Denmark and the Big Five in Saturday’s final. There are 10 spots left, but 15 nations are keen to snatch one of those tickets. Who is going to make it?

I’ve been saying for ages that semi-final 2 is perhaps a little easier for some surprise qualifiers, but after Tuesday’s curveballs of both San Marino and Montenegro qualifying for the first time ever, who knows what’s going to happen? Maybe a semi-final lacking so many obvious qualifiers is going to stir things up quite a bit!

Road to Copenhagen 2014: Mei Finegold – “Same Heart” (Israel)

Israel now, and one of the longer running participants in the contest with three victories to their name, including the watershed Dana International in 1998.

IsraelMei Finegold was selected internally, but the song was selected in a national selection event, Kdam, where “Same Heart” was selected. Israel have an unfortunate hat-trick of non-qualification to break, and have a fairly patchy qualification record in any case. But things are looking up this year.

This is a fabulous song, husky-voiced Mei has a lot of power and this is a perfect match for her. Mei has had enough, so get out of the way, she’s got a bloody samurai sword! The chorus throbs with synths and frustrated lyrics are spat out.

Jerusalem calling: Israel’s 2014 Eurovision selection (Kdam)

Celebrating 40 years in Eurovision, Israel started well, even picking up back-to-back wins in the late 70s. They arguably ushered in the modern era of Eurovision when Dana International won in 1998, but since then things haven’t come quite so easily.

IsraelThe 21st century has seen a patchy qualification record with the occasional top 10 finish, but the last three years have seen Israel miss the final. Mei Finegold was chosen internally to bring hope back to the controversial Eastern state, with a public vote in selection event Kdam deciding which of three songs will go to Copenhagen.

It will be an uphill struggle, but Mei seems to be a popular artist, and I do love a bit of Hebrew. Weirdly there were no live performances of these, music videos were filmed for all three songs. Extravagant!

Eurovision Reloaded: Tallinn 2002 – My Top 5

THIS IS IT. The final five. I know you’ve all been chewing your nails and that’s not good because you might get an infection or something. I mean imagine if one of your fingers dropped off, I couldn’t forgive myself. You wouldn’t be able to type as fast, it would be all weird. I could lose one of my little fingers I think, I don’t use the left one really.

So yeah, anyway, Tallinn! It’s been a punishing selection. Who would have thought we’d have had something as amazing as Malmö 2013 having just watched Tallinn 2002? Hell, even 2008 was blinding. But here are the cream of the crop, the kings of the hills etc. Hope you like them. Continue reading
