Album: Icona Pop – “This is… Icona Pop” (2013)

I updated my iPod with a clutch of new albums last weekend to start off 2014 with plenty to write about, and yet I haven’t quite made the most of that at work this week. So the unusual (for me) source of an album review now is a disc I’ve been playing a lot in the car.

Not exactly a revolutionary way to listen to music, but I don’t think I’ve ever used it to ‘break in’ a new album. But at a slim 33 minutes, Icona Pop’s debut album has seen several rotations during my daily commute this week. Making waves in 2013 with their debut worldwide hit “I love it”, this pair of Swedish punky-pop girls have yet to capitalise with a second hit. How will a whole album fare then? Continue reading

My Top 50 of 2013: #30 – #21

Let’s keep powering through, YEAH!!! Let’s hear some enthusiasm! Or not, whatever. So here’s the halfway mark, and to spice things up, I’m writing this quite drunk as I’ve just got back from my family Christmas party, and realised I hadn’t written it yet. Fun!

Skip back to #50 – 41, or #40 – 31, or ahead to #20 – 11 and the Top 10 Continue reading

Single: Icona Pop – “All Night” (2013)

After finally turning breakthrough hit “I love it” into a global smash, it was high time for Swedish duo Icona Pop to follow it up. Such a big hit leaves many fledgling acts with a dilemma. Do they just pop out some more of the same and hope that they’ve engineered a market for their sound, or do they need to capitalise on their 15 minutes of fame and show off their versatility?

Icona_Pop_All_NightThe issue with the first option is that you might finish with a song that’s sort of like the big hit, but not quite as good, with the similarities only serving to highlight this contrast. Unfortunately this is the lot Icona Pop have ended up with on “All night”.

A youthful and energetic bit of dance-pop isn’t lacking on the melody front, but that sort of bratty shout-singing suddenly feels quite two-dimensional. While “I love it” had a refreshingly gobby twist to the lyrics, “All night” is a bit too mild-mannered. What could sound like a sweet little melody gets swamped in fairly unfulfilling noise. Single: Icona Pop & Charli XCX – “I love it” (2013)

2013 might be a bit of a stretch, this song has been rattling along for a little while, with the UK’s release coming over a year later than its original release in Sweden. But it was worth the wait, giving Icona Pop their first No.1 anywhere, selling over 100,000 downloads in its first week.

Those Swedes are at it again, with more top-class pop music. But it’s not the usual Max Martin flavoured pop, this is more of a hands-in-the-air dance anthem than anything (sidenote: I hate how everything always has to be an ‘anthem’, but I don’t know what else to say. I should buy a thesaurus).

It’s just far enough away from the sort of Katy Perry & Lady Gaga pop music to not sound like we’ve heard it all before, but close enough for radio stations to lap it up. It reminds me a bit of Shampoo really, a pair of crazy outspoken girls just having a lot of fun. Continue reading
