Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Let it snow

toy day poseAs the nights draw in for the Winter, Animal Crossing is still a hotbed of seasonal activity. Aside from the monthly fishing tourney, snow has covered the village enabling you to create living snowmen who give you all manner of seasonal swag before they melt. But the villagers only have one thing on their mind, the even-more-materialistic-than-Christmas festival of “Toy Day”. Continue reading

Animal Crossing: New leaf – Goodbye is the harvest word

As 2013 rolls steadily towards its conclusion, there are a few events to keep us busy now that summer’s bugs have moved on. After last month’s Halloween event, November sees the arrival of Franklin the Turkey, just in time for Thanksgi… um… the Harvest Festival! Of course!

franklin cooksThere’s not quite the breadth of collectables involved in the Harvest Festival, aside from the Harvest series of furniture available in Nook’s all month. I can’t say I was a huge fan of it – it was a bit more subtle than the pumpkin themed Spooky series, but there’s just so much lilac! Still, collecting it all, as well as the many pieces of Mush series available during the month by picking special randomly appearing mushrooms in your town managed to push me up to the 100K mark with the HRA, and I got a flash new gold trophy for my troubles. Just need to get that last 50k now to unlock the HRA challenges! Continue reading

Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Halloween be thy name

On the way to catching up to ‘real time’, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get the most out of the Halloween event that unsurprisingly took place on the evening of 31 October.

jack pumpkinDuring October, the accessory shop started stocking six different scary masks. It was a bit of a pain to collect the set, you only get one a day, and that bug mask never seemed to come up. But the benefits of your diligence were made apparent when Jack, the Pumpkin King arrived in town, having heralded his arrival by mail a few times during the month. Continue reading

Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Since U been gone

A few weeks ago I finally broke the deadlock and got back into Animal Crossing. But I had a LOT of catching up to do. For those of you not following my exploits, I had been determined to get a scorpion and the September-only salmon. However, a busy period for me meant fruitless hours trying to catch the scorpion on September evenings crawling with crickets. Not worth it.

genji where were youSimilarly fruitless were my searches for salmon, which I gathered had migrated up the river in the second half of the month. But then suddenly it was October and I hadn’t played for weeks. So I time-travelled. I feel bad about it, but I think I could well have given up entirely if I hadn’t caught those things. Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Lost in time

I feel guilt. Those poor animals on my copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf have been trapped in perpetual August for a few months now … and all because of a stupid scorpion. I had been determined to catch all the different kinds of bugs and fish in AC:NL, but the tricky scorpion eluded me after three months.

acnl gulliverWell, it didn’t ALWAYS elude me, a fair number of them attacked me, leading me to pass out and wake up on my doorstep shortly afterwards. September was the last month to catch them, but an overwhelming number of crickets meant the chances of encountering a scorpion were minimal.

I’d been fed some misinformation about salmon too, which I also missed in September. So before it got too far away, I thought I would keep my game clock set to August and finally catch up. Except I’m STILL having trouble with the scorpions and frankly losing patience with them. I’m not getting any fun out of the quest, and as it disrupted my routine with AC:NL, I’ve almost stopped playing entirely. Continue reading
