Eurovision 2013: My Top 5

Eurovision 2013 might be firmly in the past, but it’s finally time for me to wrap up my countdown. Watching the DVD yesterday, it just confirmed how much I enjoyed everything about it. I had a great time in Oslo’s 2010 contest, but I felt a lot more investment in this. Following Baku’s 2012 contest closely to report on the blog really got me better acquainted with the contestants than ever, and this year I went even further on that front.

So now I don’t just think about the songs sent to Malmö, I also remember the arena, the performances, the characters. At the risk of sounding really sickly, it’s little things – the amazing reaction to Anouk qualifying, Gianluca’s goofy faces, Elitsa screaming “Bulgariaaaa” in the green room, Margaret’s victory Joey-dance, Esma… well, just Esma.

I don’t know if the songs are necessarily better than other music I listen to, but that emotional investment in the music and the performing artists have ensured I still don’t feel bored of the class of 2013 despite listening to them a LOT over the last 6 months.

I also hope that people who read this blog have enjoyed the journey too, it’s felt a bit labour-intensive at times, but I’ve been totally blown away with the numbers of views. Sure, a LOT of them have been people googling Eddie Razaz’s nipples and finding that ONE post (though fair play, he’s got a great body), but in March I wondered if I would break 50,000 views by this point, and instead I’m on the home stretch to 100,000 views instead. So thank you so much for this support, and I hope you hang around for the other stuff (Margaret Berger’s album review coming in the next few days for a start).

If you want to catch up on the rest of my countdown, here are links to #39-31, #30-21, #20-11 & #10-6. Also everything I’ve ever written about Eurovision 2013 (DAYS worth of writing) is in the Malmö 2013 hub.

Eurovision 2013: My #10 – #6

Nearly there! I’m back from Amsterdam now so I can finally wrap this little adventure up in the next few days.

So we are down to the last ten. The Big Five are out of the way, with Italy ending up a creditable 11th, but the presence of only one DNQ leads me to think that Europe made some decent choices this year. Perhaps it didn’t all go my way, but it was definitely a pleasure to see nearly all of my favourite songs grace the Grand Final.

You can skip back to #39-31, #30-21, #20-11 or ahead to the top 5, as well as the Malmö 2013 hub for everything I’ve ever written about this year’s contest.

Eurovision 2013: My #20 – #11

I really need to wrap this up, don’t I? I mean come on, it’s like 6 weeks after the show…

So here we are in the top 20, and already a really solid selection of hot trax from Europe’s biggest music festival. There will be crazy costumes, props, big ballads and a near decade long payoff, but who will be left in my top 10? You’re excited right? Yes.

You can skip back to #39-31, #30-21 or ahead to #10-6 and the top 5, as well as the Malmö 2013 hub for everything I’ve ever written about this year’s contest.

Eurovision 2013: My #30 – 21

I promise to get this done soon, it feels like so long ago since Eurovision, to the point where there is plenty of news already about next year’s Danish contest, including the amazing and shocking news that San Marino’s two-time representative confirmed she is going for a third attempt.

You can skip back to #39-31 or ahead to #20-11, #10-6 and the top 5, as well as the Malmö 2013 hub for everything I’ve ever written about this year’s contest.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, how about dealing with the 2013 contest? I loved this year’s entries. It may have been difficult to zero in on a winner, but even the mid-table songs on my countdown are pretty good, and I imagine I’ll keep a lot of them for the iPod after this is all over. So without further ado… Continue reading

Eurovision 2013: My #39 – 31

I think I’ve been putting this off to an extent. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been busy (eh…) or lazy (closer). I wanted to finish the Madonna countdown, but perhaps it’s because I was avoiding closure. The Eurovision comedown is not an isolated phenomenon; symptoms involve hissy fits, gay comas, and not changing the CD in the car for something non-Eurovision.

But this is the last thing I have left to do – ooh, and post some photos – so I might as well kick it off while I have some time. These countdowns take ages to write up!

You can skip ahead to #30-21, #20-11, #10-6 and the top 5, as well as the Malmö 2013 hub for everything I’ve ever written about this year’s contest.
