Well, what do I know, eh? What a crazy night!! Well, a crazy morning for me, it’s a lovely Spring morning in Japan, and I’ve just been watching the show via a rather buggy connection on SVT’s playback service. At least it was up (no thanks, iPlayer…). So let’s take this one stage at a time.

Road to Copenhagen 2014: Tanja – “Amazing” (Estonia)

Now one of my favourite Eurovision nations, and something that might seem like one of the most brazen “Euphoria” rip-offs. Maybe that’s a little harsh, because it’s still a lovely song.

EstoniaEstonia have a long history at Eurovision now, celebrating 20 years at the contest this year. Its prime period remains the turn of the century, where it picked up four top 10 finishes in a row, including its only win to date, in 2001. In recent years it’s been a little tougher for the Baltic nation, kicking off the semi-final era by missing five finals in a row. Things are a little better now, qualifying in four of the next five years.

Another win seems elusive but certainly not out of the question, and the effortlessly stylish selection show “Eesti Laul” had an interesting selection of potential representatives. Beating 2009 representative Sandra Nurmsalu was Tanja. Continue reading

Tallinn calling: Estonia’s 2014 Eurovision selection (Eesti Laul)

We are well into Eurovision selection season now, and it’s all I can do to keep up with the nations deciding their representatives for May’s Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. It’s my pleasure to say that tonight I’ll be looking at the effortlessly cool Estonia and its slick selection event Eesti Laul.

Estonia2014 marks Estonia’s 20th appearance at the contest, and caps 20 years as the most successful Baltic nation, furthermore a beacon amongst the Eastern European nations participating. They’ve reached the top 10 eight times, most recently in 2012, and won the contest with the less well-regarded “Everybody” the last time Eurovision came to Copenhagen back in 2001. With Denmark winning in last year Sweden as they did in 2000, could Estonia continue that parallel and bring the contest back to Tallinn?

A bumper crop of 189 songs were slimmed down to 20 semi-finalists competing in two semis to determine the final 10. A 50/50 Jury/Televote split chose the top 2, with a televote picking the act who will wave the Sinimustvalge in Denmark. I’m expecting a lot from this you know…

Album: Madonna – “Music” (2000)

It’s a bit weird doing these reviews now. With other artists I was mostly on new ground with their back catalogues. Even with some of the earlier Madonna albums I wasn’t completely familiar. But how do I objectively rate albums that I’ve known for nearly 10 years?

Still, I’m going to ANYWAY. I went through periods when I thought “Music” was more exciting and futuristic (and therefore better) than “Ray of Light”, but maybe I was younger then (actually I’m quite sure I was). But also I don’t want to judge it too harshly in comparison to “Ray of Light”, which is still a superb album.

Someone once summed it up well for me, noting that the grace and sophistication of “Ray of Light” threw into stark contrast the follow-up, with Madonna in a cowboy pimp costume with Ali G like some hen night. Though let’s not forget she was ripping her trousers in her “American Pie” video earlier that year.

While THAT side of it felt like unfulfilled potential, I feel Madonna is more the core of this album than in “Ray of Light”. By that I mean that she is usually the main feature of the music whereas in “Ray of Light” it was too easy for me to get distracted by the lush arrangements of William Orbit.

Oh I know what I mean … let’s just get on with this. (BTW I love the artwork) Continue reading
