Single: Justin Timberlake – “Suit & Tie” (2013)

What exciting new music has 2013 got in store for us? Well I’ve beaten you over the head several times with Eurovision stuff – and I’m only just getting started. But no, for now there’s a big pop comeback, or whatever you used to call Justin Timberlake’s career.

Justin Timberlake - Suit & TieHe’s good at bringing the singles, even if the album left a little to be desired in my opinion. “Futuresex / Lovesounds” for me was the first hint that he was going to disappear into a swamp of tedious RnB electro slow jamzzz. But there are always the singles to cling onto. The FS/LS singles didn’t quite measure up to “Justified’s” hits, but it was still premium product.

Astonishingly that was SEVEN years ago, an eternity in the pop world. Has he really been working on the film career that intensely? It doesn’t feel like it … but for someone like JT I can imagine he could comfortably retire on his earnings.

But here we are with belated third album “The 20/20 experience” and lead single “Suit & Tie”. I just don’t get why after all this time they couldn’t have the video ready at the same time as the song’s release … the most frustrating part of the digital music age.

Good old days

The song though, it’s not pop anymore, in fact in a climate where all the RnB stars are turning to electropop and dance music for hits, Justin – who was way ahead of the curve on this trend for a major star – seems to be going in the opposite direction. “Suit & Tie” is a pretty standard (you might even say stale) RnB track. It’s got so many swizzly bits of production it’s difficult to say it’s a particular sound.

But it’s got those falsetto vocals, some horn samples, just a bit retro. The lyric video looks like it could easily have passed for the real video, but looks like it’s going to tread a pretty well-trodden path of millionaire playboys in fancy clothes, smoking expensive things and seducing parades of faceless models. Hasn’t this been done to death?

I was really looking forward to his comeback, but this just leaves me totally cold.  Just feels like style over substance, something that would’ve sounded dated back in 2007, and of course it’ll sell anyway. Troubling times…
